Pneumococcal Disease
Pneumococcal Diseases include bacteremia (bloodstream infection) and bacterial meningitis (brain and spinal cord infection), a potentially fatal condition that may leave many children with life-long disabilities such as developmental delay, seizures, deafness or impaired vision. Pneumococcous bacteria, or streptococcus pneumonia, also is a major cause of pneumonia, sinusitis, and otitis media.
In the United States, there are approximately 16,000 cases of invasive Pneumococcal Disease each year among children under age 5. Pneumococcal Disease in children costs the United States health care system an estimated $ 1.5 billion annually. Worldwide, more than 1.2 million children die each year as a result of Pneumococcal Disease.
